The Greek word Θέσμια means tradition—a custom, practice, belief or behavioural pattern of importance in the life of a community. Folk traditions, a component of folklore, are passed down within a group or society and have symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past. Common examples are holiday rituals, impractical but socially meaningful clothes (like lawyers' wigs or military officers' spurs) and social norms such as greetings.
Traditions can persist and evolve for thousands of years. The word tradition itself derives from the Latin tradere, which means to transmit, to hand over, to give for safekeeping.
The idea behind the Thesmia brand is to acknowledge, honour and celebrate the folk traditions of the Cretan past. To pass them along to a new generation so the designs and craftsmanship of handmade Cretan products can be appreciated in the future as well as today.
Θέσμια begins with the eighth letter of the Greek alphabet Θ, representing the number 8 and the symbol for infinity ∞.
Thesmia is tradition—everlasting and infinite.
